Print Options ... Civil Airways Map

We recommend that you print out the entire set of charts using a color printer.  If you save them in document protectors in a loose-leaf notebook, you'll never have to fool with this step again.

We offer two methods to print the Civil Airways Map:

Recommended Method: This method is a bit more complicated than method 2 but will give you more control over your final product.  You will need to have some kind of graphics program on your computer, the assumption being that you are competent in its use (or willing to play with it.)  Microsoft Photo Editor is installed on many modern computers and will work fine.  Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro, or some other similar program will also work nicely.

1)  First, using the Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder which contains the charts.  This folder is installed in a subfolder of the main MS Flight Simulator Folder.  Within the MSFS folder, you'll see another subfolder named '_Radio_Range_Manual' and within this, a subfolder named 'RR'.  Double-click this folder and when it opens up, double-click on the 'Color Charts' folder. Once you have opened the 'Color Charts' folder, look for the files which start with the word "PRINT".  Each of these six files is a single chart which you'll need to open and print.

2)  Double-click on the first chart in the list (making mental note of whether the name ends in 'Landscape' or 'Portrait' and your default photo editor will start, displaying your chart.  (If you have multiple photo editing software and you wish to use a program other than the default, rather than double-clicking on the first chart, right click, select 'Open with' then choose the editor you desire.) 

3)  Now, just load your printer with 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper, select either Landscape or Portrait options and print.  If you want to print on a different size sheet, adjust the settings for your printer.  You really should print these in color, as in grayscale you will be unable to distinguish between the different-colored airways.  If you should elect to print in grayscale, you'll need to visually compare each airway with a color chart you've displayed on-screen and write-in the airway color on your grayscale chart.

4) Repeat steps 1-3, above, for each of the remaining files (only the ones that start with PRINT.)

I apologize in advance to those of you over the age of 50 -- it will be extremely difficult to read the print on the page without the use of corrective lenses or, better yet, a magnifying glass.  One option is to use the graphics program to upsize each chart, then print out smaller areas of the chart in the larger size.  As there are so many graphics programs out there, I'll not be able to go into specifics here, but for most of you, it should be fairly easy to figure out.

Method Two: Easier, but less elegant, rougher-looking product may print only a portion of the map on a page. Here is the procedure (you may want to write down or print out the steps below before you continue):

1. Click the first link below (Eastern USA).  The chart should open within your browser.
2. Move the Frame bars of your browser to select the portion of the map of interest.
3. Click File, then select "Print Preview"
4. DO NOT CLICK THE PRINT BUTTON at the top of the screen
   as you must change a print option before proceeding!!!
5. Click either the Portrait or the Landscape Icon along the top of the window
6. Select the proper scale so that the entire chart fits on a single page
7. Now click the "Print" button at the top left of the window, and when another dialog box pops up, press 'OK'
8. Press the 'Close' button, then the 'Back' button on your browser to return to this page.
9. Repeat steps 2-8 for each successive chart in the list above.
